Report a dealer cloning scam

Four places take these reports. Each one does a different job, so file with all four if you can. It takes about half an hour in total.

If you wired money, call your bank first

Ask the bank to recall the wire or reverse the ACH, and give it the date, the amount and the receiving bank. A recall sometimes works in the first day or two and almost never after that, so make this call before you file anything else.

Where to file

Reports are free, and you do not need to have lost money. A report about a site that tried to scam you helps the next buyer.

BBB Scam Tracker

Better Business Bureau

A public database anyone can search. Your report warns the next buyer who looks up the dealer name or phone number.

FTC Fraud Report

Federal Trade Commission

Your report goes into a database that law enforcement agencies across the country use to spot patterns and build cases.

FBI IC3

What to have ready

Every form asks for most of these. Gather them once and the four reports go quickly.

  • The web address of the dealer site
  • The phone number and email address the seller used
  • The name of the dealer the site claimed to be
  • The invoice, contract or guarantee they sent you
  • Wire or ACH details: receiving bank, account name, date and amount
  • Screenshots of the listing and your messages with the seller
  • Where you first saw the listing, such as Facebook Marketplace or a search result
